Do pupils need user accounts or email addresses to use the Coding Canvas?
No. The platform uses a frictionless “Lesson PIN” system designed specifically to protect pupil privacy and save lesson time.
Teachers generate and display a 4-digit PIN on the classroom board, which pupils enter into the web-based Coding Canvas app to immediately load their building instructions and starter code. No student accounts, email addresses or logins are ever required.
Is camera or video data sent to external servers when pupils use the AI features?
No. All computer vision processing and AI model training take place locally on the classroom device (Chromebook, PC, Mac or iPad). No photos, video feeds or pupil data are every uploaded to cloud servers or shared with third parties, ensuring total compliance with UK GDPR and school safeguarding standards.
How do these kits align with the UK National Curriculum for Computing?
The curriculum units are mapped directly to Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 National Curriculum Computing objectives.
Across the three age bands, lessons cover fundamental concepts including algorithm design, decomposition, loops, conditionals and variables, while introducing vital modern topics such as machine learning, computer vision and ethical AI literacy.
How does the transition from block-based coding to Python work for Key Stage 3 pupils?
Primary pupils (KS1 & KS2) use intuitive Icon and Word Blocks based on Scratch logic. When pupils move to the Year 7-9 (KS3) kit, the Coding Canvas provides a live, side-by-side view showing how their block logic converts into Python text.
Once comfortable, students can toggle directly to full Python text programming, with optional support for industry-standard IDEs like Visual Studio Code.
Are there any ongoing software licence fees or subscription costs?
No. Access to both the Coding Canvas app and the online Teacher Portal (containing all 30 lesson plans per age band, slide presentations and assessment rubrics) is completely free. There are no recurring software licences, user fees or hidden subscription costs.
